𝓕𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓮 𝓕𝓻𝓲𝓭𝓪𝔂! It’s everyone’s favorite day! This time, we are joined by Natsuki Komatsu, our #FeatureFriday focus of the week! Natsuki is (obviously) Japanese who grew up in Kunitachi City. He is currently taking up Master of Engineering in Applied Chemistry (M1) at the Faculty of Engineering, TUAT. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s welcome this young scientist!

|| Fun Facts:
1. Why did I choose TUAT? It’s complicated X)
2. My favorite spot in the campus is that small yard & pond between building 1 and lecture building. It’s a perfect place to get relaxed and drink coffee surrounded by nature and enjoying four seasons.
3. I like Münchener Weißwurst with sweet mustard and pretzel🥨. I’d been in Munich for five months as an exchange student. There I had some German dishes and now they’re my favourite German food.
4. Fave JP food? Sushi. The best way to eat fish.
5. I don’t like staying up late. I’m an early bird.
6. If I became a billionaire, I will have my own laboratory, travel around the world and meet friends I met in Germany.
7. Recommended places in Japan? I’ve been to few places but among them I’d recommend Kyoto. You can visit a lot of historical places and expect good and old atmosphere of Japan.

I worked on “Intramolecular redox/Hetero Diels-Alder reaction sequence: Construction of polycyclic framework” last year. We, organic synthetic chemists, are basically working on i) synthesizing certain target compounds or ii) cultivating novel synthetic methods.

𝓕𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓮 𝓕𝓻𝓲𝓭𝓪𝔂! Hey! Wazzup? The name is Jam, from the country of bananas 笑笑 The Philippines! I’m currently on my 2nd year of Ph.D. (D2) majoring in Environmental Bioengineering from the Department of Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering.

|| Fun Facts:
1. I first came to TUAT as an exchange student. I obtained my master’s degree here, and continued right away to Ph.D.
2. My favorite spot in the campus is that mini garden across the library. Sitting right under a sakura tree, listening to the sound of nature and rippling pond water, watching the visiting birds, various fishes, while vibing to my Spotify playlist - ugh perfection, I could stay for hours.
3. I’m a big fan of science, but physics. I love chemistry and biology; biochemistry and microbiology, to be specific.
4. I dreamt of becoming a medical doctor when I was young. Along the way, I realized that MD (Doctor of Medicine) is not for me. Now I’m taking Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy).
5. My lowest grade in high school was 89. I hate (or hated?) history, especially the dates!
6. I love sushi, playing games, and singing my heart out in karaoke. I love to dance but ‘dancing’ doesn’t love me.
7. My current daily average screen time is 10h 56m. I’m hooked to instagram and mobile legends.
8. I’m a pet (or animal?) lover. Back home, we have 6 dogs, 8 cats, 3 pigs, and 27 chickens. When I was young, I had 2 hanging parrots (colasisi), 5 hamsters, 4 mice (gave birth to 5 babies) and 10+ aquarium fish. Ahh! We also had rabbits and caged doves hehehe~
9. My favorite Japanese phrase is 「お疲れ様です」 ‘otsukaresama desu’.

My main focus is on the methane consumption and bioplastic production potentials of novel methane-oxidizing bacteria. My works overlap the fields of microbial biotechnology, environmental bioengineering, and applied chemistry.

One for nature, one with nature 🌱 Today, we did (finally) the annual spring event of TUAT: お花見「o-hanami」 🌸 it’s our first time celebrating this joyous once-in-a-year event after the pandemic! Despite the weather condition, we were still able to kick it off! A cloudy day enjoyed by nokodaians with full of energy; never a dull moment with them pure little rays of sunshine! The ambiance may be cloudy, but never our feelings and presence!

I had so much fun meeting new people from various backgrounds: country, department, major, culture! Of course, it was fun meeting old faces, too! “Hisashuburi” was the introductory word of the day. Concluding words are: yokatta, subarashikatta, and tanoshikatta! 本当に楽しかった！皆さん、今日ありがとうございました！🩷🌸

Hi y’all it’s me again Jam! Yesterday, 02.04.2024 (Sunday), I visited the Ghibli Museum along with Prof. Hongo and the new exchange students from Indonesia and Germany. We had so much fun exploring around the maze-like building that Ghibli museum is. If you are a fan of the Ghibli films, this place is a must-visit! Even though you aren’t a fan of the films, like myself (coz I’ve only watched one film - Spirited Away, which I personally rate 10/10), you’d still enjoy the place! It was so cozy and magical touring around the premises and seeing how the films were created in the past, and major sneak peaks of Miyazaki Hayao’s workspaces! #iloveTUAT #actionTUAT
